By TRN Online, Kathmandu, Sept 4: The Government has decided to ban unregistered social sites in Nepal.

A meeting held on Thursday under the leadership of Minister of Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung decided to ban social media platforms that do not comply with the listing.

The decision was made public after a meeting attended by Minister Gurung, ministry officials, representatives of the Nepal Telecommunications Authority, telecom operators, and internet service provider companies.

The meeting also instructed Nepal Telecommunications Authority to disable unregistered social sites.

Last Thursday, a notice was published by the MoCIT, calling on both domestic and international platforms that have yet to register to contact the ministry within the stipulated timeframe.
The move follows a directive from the Supreme Court, which, while hearing a contempt of court case,  had ordered the government to ensure that no social media platform operates in Nepal without formal registration. In compliance, the Cabinet decided on August 25 to issue the notice.
