By Binaya Karna, Kalyanpur (Saptari), Aug. 19: Protests have been staged in Rajbiraj after the Supreme Court ordered an investigation into the Gaur massacre that took place in Gaur, Rautahat, 19 years ago.
Leaders and cadres of Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) Nepal demonstrated in Rajbiraj on Monday evening.
Burning tires and shouting slogans at the local Gajendra Chowk, JSP leaders accused that an consiprecay was held against their chairman Upendra Yadav after he did not agree to the land ordinance.
Chair of the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP), Nepal, Saptari District, Kedar Prasad Yadav claimed that there was a conspiracy against their chairman when the land ordinance was not passed to turn Madhesh into a desert.
"This conspiracy has been hatched to suppress the politics of the Madhesi and indigenous peoples by trapping their president. Therefore, we immediately held symbolic protest," he said.
Supreme Court has ordered an investigation into the Gaur murder case and action against the culprits.
A joint bench of justices Til Prasad Shrestha and Nityananda Pandey asked why the case had been allowed to remain idle for so long. The order instructs police to either explain what investigative steps have been taken or to proceed immediately with fresh inquiries. The full text of the verdict has yet to be released.
On March 21, 2007, the then Yadav-led MJF and the Maoist party held rallies in Gaur, Rautahat at the same venue, the Rice Mills ground.
The MJF’s district chapter announced a mass assembly and mobilised supporters from multiple districts. Maoist-affiliated Madhesi Rastriya Mukti Morcha also decided to hold a rally at the same site, setting the stage for a confrontation.
Within hours, the rally site had turned into a battlefield. Some victims were beaten to death and their bodies dumped in drainage canals.
In total, 27 Maoists were killed. Another 53 were injured.
