BY A STAFF REPORTER,Kathmandu, May 29: President Ramchandra Paudel has extended his best wishes to all Nepalis living in home and abroad on the occasion of the Republic Day on Thursday.

In his message, the President said that the day marks a history as 18 years ago on May 29, through the struggle, sacrifice and dedication of the Nepali people, we achieved a democratic republic with the sovereignty of the citizens. He also expressed heartfelt tribute to all the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for this proud transformation. Additionally, he expressed respect to the revered leaders who endured imprisonment and torture for democracy, justice and freedom.

Stating that there is no better system than democratic republic in the world, he said that it recognises the people as sovereign.

He said, “The federal democratic republic has ensured us full political rights. It has united us and given us the opportunity to move forward together towards a prosperous future. It has inspired us to build a shared nation by giving us ownership over our identity, language, religion, community, culture, and land. Hence, it stands as a great inspiration and responsibility for national building.”

He said that the character of the state must change to connect its people with the change. He said, “I believe we cannot delay in making our politics, governance, parties, and representative institutions fully democratic, fair, competitive, just and effective in order to fulfill the true essence of the republic.”

Additionally, the day reminds us of our historic responsibility. President Paudel hoped that we all unite to preserve the dignity of the republic and to make it more prosperous.

Meanwhile, Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav also extended his heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for happiness, peace, prosperity and continued progress to all Nepali brothers and sisters at home and abroad.

In his message, he respectfully remembered the great martyrs who sacrificed their invaluable lives during past democratic movements, struggles and the Madhes uprising for the establishment of a federal democratic republican system.

The message read that the Republic Day is an opportunity to reflect on democratic values. It must be observed as a day to reinforce civil rights, equality and the rule of law, while honouring the struggles and contributions of ordinary citizens.

The Vice President stated that political parties are the foundation of Nepal’s democracy, playing key roles in constitution drafting and policy-making. He emphasised that parties must strengthen democracy, prioritise public service, and rise above partisan interests to address national challenges effectively. He said, “We must urgently build public trust, ensure stability and advance economic and social progress. Failure in good governance and accountability could weaken democracy. Rising public frustration must be addressed through democratic means. Republic Day is a key moment to reaffirm our commitment to the Constitution and a stronger democracy.”

Likewise, Nepali Congress president Sher Bahadur Deuba in his message said that a progressive, civil, and prosperous Nepal could be built only through the protection of the Constitution and the institutional development of a federal democratic republican system.

“Safeguarding this historic achievement, earned through the sacrifices of the Nepali people, is a shared responsibility of us all. I believe that this Republic Day will inspire us to move forward on the path of inclusive democracy, social justice, equality, and prosperity,” Deuba said in his message.
