Govt. directs to operate 'fast track desk' against racial discrimination

Kathmandu, May 4: The government has directed to operate a 'fast track desk' enquiring about the ongoing sit-in staged at Maitighar under the leadership of Dipa Nepali and to control incidents of racial discrimination taking place in the country.     

The sit-in has been staged at Maitighar under the leadership of Dipa, against the discriminatory practice in renting rooms to the Dalit community.     

Such a directive was issued after the discussion between Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizen, Sita Badi, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Sobita Gautam, and Prime Minister Balendra Shah's Press and Research Expert, Deepa Dahal.     

During the meeting, Minister Badi said it was a matter of concern that racial discrimination is still taking place in the country despite laws and awareness programmes.     

Similarly, Minister Gautam stressed the need of efficient mechanism to immediately register complaints related to racial discrimination and to advance action process.     

After the discussion, Home Secretary Raj Kumar Shrestha was asked to bring a 'fast track desk' into operation in order to immediately conduct the hearing on complaints related to racial and social discrimination.     

Home Secretary Shrestha shared that all 77 district administration offices would be instructed to operate such a desk. Sharing that the existing legal provisions are sufficient, he expressed commitment to give priority to the effective implementation of existing laws.(RSS)
