Nagepokhari emerges as tourist destination

blog

By Gun Bahadur Roka, Sulikot, June 7: Nagepokhari, located in Ajirkot Rural Municipality-1 in Gorkha, is increasingly attracting domestic tourists.

Situated at an altitude of 3,255 metres above sea level, the scenic site is gaining popularity for its natural beauty, cool climate and religious significance.

With the onset of the summer season, the number of visitors from the Tarai and Inner Madhes districts has risen significantly. Locals of Bhachchek Bazaar said that Nagepokhari has become an ideal destination for people seeking relief from the heat and looking to enjoy a cooler environment and picturesque landscapes.

Chairperson of Ajirkot Rural Municipality Dipak Devkota said the area experiences a distinct tourism season each year as visitors flock to escape the summer heat. He added that tourists are also drawn by the stunning views of the Ganesh Himal and Buddha Himal mountain ranges visible from Nagepokhari.

To promote tourism in the area, the rural municipality has prepared several plans and is working to develop the route as part of the Buddha Himal-Himalchuli Great Lakes Circuit Trail.

According to the municipality, a detailed project report is being prepared for a trekking trail that will extend from Rubinala through Dudh Pokhari and Dordi to the Marsyangdi region.

Visitors to Nagepokhari can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding hills, Ganesh Himal and Buddha Himal, as well as four varieties of rhododendron in bloom, including red, white, pink and blue. The site is also known for its spectacular sunrise and sunset views. Devkota said the area's peaceful surroundings, clean air and natural beauty have made it especially attractive to nature lovers and trekking enthusiasts.

Nagepokhari also holds religious and cultural significance. According to local belief, the pond was formed from sacred water that flowed from a rare serpent deity residing in a hidden cave on Mount Kailash.

Folklore holds that the serpent possesses a divine poison whose power spreads to the surrounding vegetation, contributing to the abundance of valuable medicinal herbs in the region.

Reflecting these beliefs, locals continue the tradition of offering special prayers and worship at Nagepokhari during the festival of Nag Panchami. Local legends associated with the pond have further strengthened its cultural identity.

Access to the area has improved in recent years with the expansion of trekking trails initiated by the rural municipality. Nagepokhari can be reached after a five- to six-hour walk from Sirandanda above Bhachchek. However, as there are currently no hotels or homestays in the area, visitors are advised to carry their own food and other essential supplies.

Local officials believe that with further investment in infrastructure, trail development and effective promotion, Nagepokhari has the potential to become one of Nepal’s leading tourist destinations. Combining natural beauty, a cool climate and religious importance, the site is steadily emerging as a major attraction for domestic travellers.Rumus, sum ius oc re comande rmilicae maxim poptea L.
