Poets mark Buddha Jayanti by reciting poems

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, May 14: In a poetic tribute to peace, humanity, and reflection, 23 poets came together to recite powerful verses on the occasion of Buddha Jayanti on Monday. They recited their poems during a literary event "Samakalin Nepali Kabitaka Swarharu" held in Koteshwor Multiple Campus, Jadibuti.

The event was jointly organised by Bartaman Kabita Samuha and Sabdankur Masik.

The event featured an array of poems ranging from political satire and ecological concerns to spiritual introspection and calls for peace. 

Among the highlights was Krishna Bause’s recitation of the nonviolence poem 'Hita Buddha Jayete' and Bishwa Sigdel’s biting political satire 'Joker Jaba Tanasaha Banchha'. War and peace were explored through Chandra Bahadur Lama’s 'Yuddha Ra Shantiko Bich' and Tirtha Raj Bhatt’s peace-seeking poem 'Buddha Ko Chhayasanga'.

Poet Radha Karki moved the audience with her freedom-themed verse 'Unmukti', while Deepak Sapkota questioned societal norms in 'Manchhe Hunuko Dosh'. Environmental awareness was raised through Dhir Kumar Shrestha’s 'Pabitra Kranti'.

Adding diversity to the poetic evening, Subash Singh Parajuli and Rami Priya recited separate poems with the same title 'Om Mani Padme Hum', with Angel Nilu enriching the occasion by presenting a poem in Maithili language. Noted satirical pieces were offered by Amar Akash in 'Rukh ko Hanga Pani Nakatnuhos', Lila Raj Dahal in 'Ghau', and Keshav Gyawali 'Aagat' in 'Maun Briksha'.

Other recitations included Rajanimila’s'Prem Brikshya', Sojho Gaunle’s 'Manchhelaai Marne Subidha Pani Chhaina', and Rajendra Prasad Adhikari’s introspective 'Mrityu Ek Bhram, Ek Katha'.

The event was eloquently emceed by poet Rami Priya, whose dynamic presence and passion for poetry added vibrancy to the event.

The gathering of poetic voices not only honoured the teachings of the Buddha but also highlighted the power of words in shaping a more conscious and compassionate society.
