Dang, May 13: An agricultural
cooperative at Tulsipur Sub-Metropolis-4 in the district
has established a seed bank to
preserve indigenous crops. The seed bank is aimed at protecting the crops that
are facing gradual decline.
Cooperative's Chairperson Jharana
Pun informed that the seed collection campaign had already begun. The drive
would be expanded gradually, she said, adding that seeds of more than 50
varieties of crops and vegetables were collected so far. The indigenous seeds
would be sowed for further production.
"The seeds collected would be
utilized to increase production and later sold to farmers," she
added.
The seeds of local rice, soybean,
wheat, tomato, sesame, foxtail millet, buckwheat are collected for promoting
indigenous crops, which is a positive work, said Kulraj Chaudhari, chief of
agriculture section at the local level.
"Many traditional crops are
fading fast. So, such initiative launched by cooperative is laudable," he
observed. (RSS)
