BBC News, May 9: Leaders of countries and religions around the world have offered their congratulations and well wishes to the new Pope Leo XIV.
Robert Prevost is the first North American pontiff to be elected leader of the Catholic Church.
Chicago-born Prevost is seen as a reformer and worked for many years as a missionary in Peru before being made an archbishop there.
US President Donald Trump has called it a "great honour" to have a pope from the US.
Later on Friday, the new pontiff will celebrate Mass in the Sistine Chapel alongside the cardinals that chose him.
In Peru many are proud of the new Pope, but allegations of a cover-up of sexual abuse cases will be among the challenges he faces, writes our South America correspondent Ione Wells.
