Binayo making training begins

blog

By A Staff Reporter,Lalitpur, May 6: A seven-day training to make the traditional musical instrument called Binayo has begun in Lalitpur. Organised by the Kirat Mundum Study Centre with financial support from the Adivasi Janajati Rashtriya Utthan Pratishthan, the training was inaugurated on Sunday.

Janak Rai, Vice-Chairperson of the Kirat Rai Yayokkha, expressed confidence that the training would contribute to preserving the Binayo, a cultural musical instrument of the Kirat community. He stated that the training would not only teach the younger generation to craft the traditional instrument but also to play it.

"The Kirat Mundum Study Centre has made a significant contribution to documenting Mundum by publishing a book 'Kirat Mundum Risiya'," he said, "Similarly, this training on the traditional Binayo instrument will engage the youth in preserving this nearly extinct indigenous musical art."

Jeeten Rai, Chairperson of the centre and a renowned singer/musician, emphasised that it was now time to explore classical art and music. "We must be conscious to cultivate a refined society," he said, "It is time we rediscover our classical music and rituals." He stressed the need for scholarly research and practice in such fields, adding that these subjects should be incorporated into academic discussions and learning. Only by integrating them into education can they be sustainably preserved, he asserted.

A total of 20 participants are receiving the training, which will run until Saturday.
