By Our Correspondent,Humla, Apr. 23: Women of the Himalayan Lama community are increasingly being drawn to the Thaikor, a traditional cultural ornament.
This growing attraction is largely due to the younger generation of women beginning to take an interest in preserving their cultural attire and heritage.
Chhapal Lama, a local of Simkot Rural Municipality,3, said that women of the younger generation were more interested in Thaikor, which is regarded a symbol of identity for Lama women.
She said that there was a time when only the older women wore Thaikor on their heads, and the younger ones had stopped using it, raising concerns about its preservation.
However, the renewed interest among younger women has brought hope for the protection of their culture and traditional jewellery.
Women wear Thaikor while dancing during festivals and special occasions.
She said that Thaikor is crafted from expensive metals such as gold, silver, diamond, and coral.
The cost of a single Thaikor can range from Rs. 400,000 to Rs. 500,000.
Previously, there used to be only one Thaikor in a household, but now, families are starting to provide one for each woman in the household. This shift reflects the increasing attraction towards Thaikor among women.
Takdir Lama, Vice-chairperson of Namkha Rural Municipality, said that the growing attraction towards traditional jewellery is a positive development.
He emphasised that women taking the initiative in its preservation is commendable. He also noted that when women expressed interest in such ornaments, men started supporting them, which has further contributed to the conservation efforts.
At present, Lama women wear Thaikor not only during their cultural festivals but also in other public events, where they perform songs and dances.
