By Prem Adhikari,Ilam, Apr. 13: In celebration of the Nepali New Year 2082, preparations are in full swing in Antu and Kanyam of Ilam, as ambassadors from various countries are set to visit the region.

The informal diplomatic visit, coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Nepal Tourism Board, in collaboration with Suryodaya Municipality, will take place from 13 to 15 April.

As part of the annual tradition of inviting resident ambassadors to explore new tourism destinations during the New Year, this year’s programme will spotlight the scenic areas of Antu and Kanyam. Mayor Rana Bahadur Rai of Suryodaya Municipality confirmed the details.

The high-profile delegation will include Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, ministry officials, staff from the Tourism Board, and over 45 dignitaries. In anticipation of the visit, the municipality has undertaken extensive cleaning and beautification efforts in the region.

On 13 April, a formal welcome is planned in Kanyam, featuring traditional tea-tasting sessions and horseback rides. Diplomats will be welcomed in full cultural flair, with over 40 horses prepared for the ceremonial procession. Locals in ethnic attire will escort the guests to Chipitar.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to experience tea harvesting, fishing at the Antu pond, and witnessing the sunrise on 14 April, followed by cultural performances including Sakela, Jhankri, and dances by Rai, Lepcha, and Newar communities.

Ambassadors from countries such as Egypt, South Korea, the UK, Switzerland, Thailand, Australia, Czech Republic, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and members of the EU delegation have confirmed their attendance, as per municipal architect Sirjan Gadal.

Deputy Mayor Durga Kumar Baral is heading the main organising committee, which has mobilised several subcommittees to oversee logistics, hospitality, and cleanliness. Community groups in Antu are also actively involved.

Mayor Rai expressed confidence that this visit will boost the visibility of Antu and Kanyam as emerging tourist hotspots and contribute to the success of Koshi Province’s recently announced Tourism Promotion Year. Although unofficial, the visit is expected to leave a lasting impact on regional tourism.
