By Toplal Aryal,Resunga (Gulmi), Apr. 28: Tamghas youths have become active in the effort to preserve and promote the traditional folk hymn (bhajan) culture. A group of 18 local youths are organising the ‘Resunga Bhajan Evening.’
Every Monday evening, hymns are performed at various temples within Resunga Municipality. Campaigner Nishesh Shrestha said that, in the first phase, the programme will be conducted at prominent religious sites across the city, with plans to gradually expand it throughout the district.
The group has set a goal of holding 53 bhajan evenings this year. The ‘Resunga Bhajan Evening’ began at the Ram Temple in Tamghas on April 14 (Baisakh 1). Shrestha said that the event was held at the Tamghasthan Temple in Upper Tamghas last week and will take place at the Bhagwati Temple next time.
He added that, as the youths are still learning, they have been performing alongside the older generation and experienced bhajan artists. The group has been managing expenses by raising funds and purchasing necessary materials through voluntary contributions.
Since all the participants are involved in some form of business or enterprise, Shrestha noted that time management remains their main challenge.
This youth-led campaign has made a significant contribution to reviving folk hymns, which have been declining due to the influence of modern music. Bhajans are not only an expression of religious faith but are means to promote social unity.
The programme has also witnessed enthusiastic participation from local residents. The ‘Resunga Bhajan Evening’ is held for two hours, from 6 pm to 8 pm, which garnered praise from the locals.
Janak Pantha, a central member of the National Folk Hymn Chudka Preservation Foundation, said that such unity and energy among youths is needed in every village for the preservation and transmission of culture.
He added that the initiative has not only enlivened the religious atmosphere but also strengthened mutual harmony and cultural awareness in society.
