By Vijay Kumar Sah,Dalkebar, Jan.1: Pokhariya Lake, located in Dalkebar, Dhanusha, is emerging as an important tourist destination in Madhes Province. Preparations are underway to accommodate visitors arriving for picnics and excursions at the beginning of the Gregorian New Year 2025.
To enhance the experience for the increasing number of tourists, the Mithila Sagar Conservation Committee has increased efforts in beautification, sanitation, drinking water facilities, electrification and security around the Mithila Sagar area.
This tourist hotspot attracts domestic visitors from Dhanusha, Mahottari, Sarlahi, Siraha and neighbouring districts, as well as tourists from the bordering areas of India, including Jayanagar, Madhubani and Sitamarhi. Visitors frequent the site for picnics and sightseeing.
According to Ram Babu Kadari, Secretary of the Pokhariya Lake Conservation Committee, the lake is a popular spot for exchanging New Year’s greetings and enjoying picnic in a communal setting. He said additional recreational activities such as boating, horse riding, and a suspension bridge were introduced this year to enhance the visitor’s experience.
Located three kilometres north of Dalkebar Chowk, Pokhariya Lake is a scenic destination in the Tarai, surrounded by lush green forests. The lake, situated within the Pokhari Damar Community Forest, spans seven bighas of land. A temple dedicated to Utteshwar Mahadev at the centre of the lake further enhances its cultural significance.
Similarly, Janakpur experiences a significant influx of Indian tourists during New Year celebrations. Many visit Janakpur with hopes of beginning the year on a positive note, offering prayers and seeking blessings for happiness and prosperity. Tourists frequently enter Dhanusha and Mahottari via various border points in large numbers during this time.
