Largest goat farm in Koshi sells 400 kids annually

Urlabari, Nov. 12:  Unique Livestock Enterprises, which is claimed to be the largest in Koshi Province, is selling about 400 kids of goat yearly. The centre, which was established as a goat-breeding resource centre, came into operation five years ago.

There are 450 goats, including she-goats, he-goats and kids of 10 species in the resource centre located in Dhanapalthan Rural Municipality-3, Betauna of Southern Morang. 

Unique Livestock Enterprises, which introduced goats of Sirohi, Ajmeri, Gujri, Kota, Totapuri and Sine breed for the first time in Koshi Province, has so far invested Rs. 20 million apart from infrastructure. 

Similarly, Barbari, Boer, Jamunapari, Khari goats, which were previously raised commercially in Koshi Province, are also reared at the farm.

According to Pankaj Jha, manager of the resource centre, goats have been reared in four modern cages constructed at the farm.

The farm which is spread over 22 bighas of land has four modern cages, including three cages with 160 feet long and 34 feet wide and one cage 50 feet long and 30 feet wide.

According to Jha, the goat-breeding resource centre was built after changing the infrastructure where Birat Poultry Farm was operating in the beginning. 

“Locals obstructed the operation of the poultry farm. After that, we are starting goat rearing,” he said. Nine people are currently employed in the farm.

Unique Livestock Enterprises, which has been producing hybrid goats which grow quickly, has sold goats in 28 districts in the last three years. 

Jha said, “Monthly management expenditure is around Rs. 450,000. The principal and interest of the bank loans is being managed from the income. The net profit till date is goats, he-goats and kids having with us at the farm worth Rs. 20 million. 

The resource centre, which has arranged for treatment by employing two animal health technicians, is selling live kid at Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 1,800 per kg. Jha said that around 100 kids are currently being prepared for sale.

Veterinary Hospital and Animal Services Expert Centre, Morang has been providing medicines and grass seeds to the centre time and again free of cost.

Ajay Kumar Sah, chief of Veterinary Hospital and Animal Services Expert Centre, Morang, said that Unique Livestock Enterprises is the biggest farm in Koshi Province. 

The centre has established breeding centres by bringing hybrid goats from Rajasthan, Haryana and Pakistan. Dr. Sah said that the breeds of goats that gain a lot of weight in a short period of time are being produced in large numbers.
