Lifting of ban on TikTok comes into effect

blog

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Sept. 7: Nearly after 10 months of ban, the government has lifted the restriction imposed on the regular operation of TikTok.

Issuing a notice on Friday, the Nepal Telecommunications Authority instructed all mobile and internet service providers to lift the ban on TikTok.

The notice issued by the NTA has directed for the removal of the ban on TikTok following the decision taken by the Council of Ministers on August 22.

After the government decided to lift the ban under certain conditions, TikTok representatives came to Kathmandu.

On Wednesday, they discussed the conditions set by the government at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology and expressed their willingness to comply with all the terms.

After three representatives from TikTok’s Singapore office submitted a letter of commitment to meet the conditions set by the government, the Ministry informed the Authority of the decision made by the Council of Ministers and instructed them to lift the ban.

The government banned TikTok on November 13, 2023, citing the disruption of social harmony by its use.

The government had set conditions that TikTok must be registered in Nepal, designate a ‘point of contact,’ promote Nepal’s tourism, support digital security and literacy, and assist in public education.
