EC asks citizens to register names for by-election

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Aug. 14: The Election Commission has urged all eligible Nepali citizens, who missed registering their name in voters’ list due to various reasons, to register their names before the announcement of the date for the by-election.

The EC today urged the eligible Nepali citizens across the country, who missed to register their names in voters’ list, especially the eligible citizens of concerned local-levels, to register their name in electoral roll before the announcement of the date for by-election.

According to Raghuram Bista, Joint Secretary and Spokesman of the Commission, a total of 34 posts had fallen vacant in different local levels, following the local level elections held on May 13, 2022. 

According to the commission, the posts of 28 ward chairs, two each rural municipal chairs and vice-chairs and one each mayor and deputy-mayor. 

According to Bista, under the Local Elections Act, 2073, if the remaining term of the posts exceeds one year, the vacancies must be filled through by-elections, which will be scheduled by the Nepal Government in consultation with the Election Commission.

According to Section (4) of the Voter’s List Act, 2073, once the election date is set, there is a legal provision to postpone the registration of names in the voters’ list for that election. 

According to the commission, individuals can register their names at the province and district election offices by filling out the online form provided for voter list registration.
