BY A STAFF REPORTER,Kathmandu, Aug. 5: Prime Minister and Chairperson of the CPN-UML, KP Sharma Oli, has said that the current coalition, including the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML, will amend the constitution for progress.

Speaking at a programme organised at the party's central office in Chyasal on Sunday for the oath-taking ceremony of recently nominated vice presidents and central members of the party, Prime Minister Oli said that efforts were being made to spread misconception that the constitution was being amended to unleash regression. He said that the constitution would be amended as per needs of the people.

“Constitution is to be amended to strengthen democracy, increase the acceptance and acknowledgment of the constitution, identify further foundations for development and prosperity and integrate with the people,” Prime Minister Oli said. “The constitution is not a religious scripture which cannot be amended. We did not talk about constitutional amendments based on some fights. We will amend it by focusing on human centric issues.”

Prime Minister Oli said that politics should be for the people based on fair competition and party leaders and cadres should be polite and accountable towards the people. He said that the CPN-UML was the party eligible to lead the country both ideologically and organisationally.

Earlier on August 1, the CPN (UML) nominated Guru Baral to the vacant post of Vice Chairman of the party and 17 central committee members.

The post of the Vice Chairman had remained vacant after the death of then Vice Chair Subas Nembang on September 12 last year.  The nominated 17 central members include Subas Karmacharya (Sindhupalchowk), Kundan Kushwaha (Rautahat), Jitendra Dev (Saptari), Rampreet Paswan (Siraha), Krishna Bhakta Pokharel (Chitwan), Kamal Krishna Timilsina (Achham), Gobinda Pun (Salyan), Kedar Sigdel (Tanahun), Manmohan Paudel (Parbat), Hardev Joshi (Darchula), Hari Upreti (Sarlahi), Indra Bhandari (Jhapa), Mahesh Bartaula (Makwanpur), Sarita Bhusal, Prabha Baral (Kaski), Manju Sharma Chalise (Baglung) and Asha Jabegu (Panchthar).
