Cucumber sale fetches farmer over Rs. 100,000 in 2 months

By Thakur Prasad Acharya,Myagdi, July 30: Basudev Acharya of Jaljala-7, Lamabagr has earned over Rs. 100,000 in two months selling off-season cucumbers. 

Acharya, who cultivated cucumbers of Kamini and Beli varieties instead of cultivating paddy, said that up to 100 kg of cucumbers are produced in the gap of two days.

He said that the produced cucumbers are sold from the house itself.

He also said that after 45 days of planting, the cucumbers are ready for eating and the yield continues for two and a half to three months.

Acharya said, "I left paddy cultivation and planted cucumbers. I got better income from cucumbers than from rice. It has been two months since it started giving the yield from 45 days of planting and it is still producing well. Even after selling up to 100,000 rupees, it is still growing well.”

He said that the produced cucumber is sold at 65 to 80 rupees per kg in the Beni market. He added, "There is a good price to receive if produced off season. Beni traders visit my home to buy cucumbers."

For the past 20 years, Acharya has been cultivating cucumbers as well as producing fresh vegetables such as cauliflower, potato, cabbage, sponge gourd, and green vegetables.

He said that Rs. 500,000 to 800,000 is saved annually from vegetable farming after cutting expenses.

Farmer Acharya shared his experience of earning a good income by working hard in the agricultural sector.

My friends from the neighbourhood went abroad but I chose agriculture. Acharya said, "From a young age, I came to think that I should work at home instead of toiling in a foreign land. I dedicated myself to the agricultural profession done by my grandfather and forefathers. I am happy and satisfied with this."
