By Basanta Parajuli,Narayangadh, Mar. 28: A male rhinoceros named Meghauli, which was translocated from Chitwan National Park to Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, has fallen ill and will be returned to Chitwan.

A team of veterinarians from Chitwan National Park (CNP) has reached Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve (KTWR) and recommended that the sick rhino, Meghauli, be returned.

Dr. Bijay Shrestha, a veterinarian from CNP currently at KTWR, has informed that the rhinoceros has wounds both externally and internally in its mouth.

Dr. Shrestha said, “The rhinoceros has wounds both inside and outside its mouth.

Currently, it has only consumed water and is unable to eat anything else.

It will be returned to CNP as it requires treatment under the direct supervision of veterinarians at the wildlife hospital.”

There is a wildlife hospital in Sauraha, Chitwan.

Meghauli was translocated to KTWR on March 23. Doctors suspect that Meghauli might have sustained injuries to its mouth during the translocation process.

The rhinoceroses named Pushpa and Anjali, who were translocated from CNP to KTWR on September 27, 2023, are now in stable condition.

Meghauli was translocated as both of them were females and a male was needed in the area for company and mating.

Dil Bahadur Purja Pun, Chief Conservation Officer of CNP, said that no decision has been made on whether Meghauli will be returned to KTWR after receiving treatment at CNP.
