By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, Dec. 13: The 20th Handicraft Trade Fair and the 18th Handicraft Competition with the theme ‘prospects for prosperity’ is scheduled in Kathmandu, from December 14 to 18.
During a press conference held in Kathmandu on Monday, the Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal (FHAN) shared the details about the fair and art competition.
The primary objective of the fare is to boost the domestic and international market for Nepali handicrafts, informed the FHAN.
The programme aims to promote export by showcasing Nepali handicraft products, foster business relationships between Nepali entrepreneurs and foreign handicraft importers and provide a platform for new entrepreneurs to enter the market, said Prachanda Shakya, the President of the Association.
The fair is expected to have approximately 130 stalls, including three pavilions.
Foreign exhibitors, including traders from Pakistan and Bangladesh, will also participate, informed Shakya.
Major highlights of the event include an extensive exhibition and sale of handicrafts, informed the FHAN.
The handicraft exhibition and competition will feature traditional art, straw art and live demonstrations.
A minimum of 15 participants per category will partake in the competition. The first, second and third winners of the competition will receive Rs. 50,000, Rs.30, 000, and Rs. 20,000 respectively, according to the FHAN.
Likewise, the artworks of 70 artists will be displayed at the exhibition venue, informed the organisers.
Nepali handicraft items worth around Rs. 12 billion are exported to over 60 countries worldwide.
This sector significantly contributes to the national economy, with a total of around Rs. 24 billion.
Likewise, approximately 1.1 million people are directly and indirectly involved in the handicraft sector.
