People-centric Campaign

blog

The freshly concluded Central Committee (CC) meeting of the CPN-Maoist Centre has endorsed a 25-point proposal on contemporary issues. The party leaders have termed the meeting as ‘extraordinary’ considering its unanimous decision to re-energise the party organisation and establish good governance in the country.  The meeting also decided to increase its size to 409 members. The party has ensured 35 per cent representation of women in the central committee. The meeting was held in Kathmandu after a hiatus of 11 months. The party will launch the ‘Maoist with People: A Campaign for Special Transformation’ nationwide on September 2. Under this three-month campaign, leaders as well as cadres of the party will get to every household and let people know about the party’s policies and programme. Besides, the leaders will also apprise people of the new accomplishments made by the federal government which is headed by the party chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda.

As part of this drive, party chairman Prachanda will also visit one ward each in all seven provinces in order to interact with the people. Speaking at the meeting on Sunday, Prachanda instructed the party rank and file to visit every household across the country.  This initiative is expected to help strengthen the party organisation even at the grassroots level. During its campaign, the party will also lobby for consolidating national unity, national sovereignty and social justice. The party has got applauds with the government opening more files related to corruption. Some high-profile politicians and bureaucrats have been suspected to be involved in the fake Bhutanese refugee scam. Charge sheets have already been registered at the Kathmandu District Court and several suspects have been in detention for further investigation. This corruption case has tainted even the nation’s image in the international arena.

With its 32 seats in the House of Representatives, the CPN-Maoist Centre is the third largest party in the country. Because no political party has secured a clear majority in the federal and provincial legislatures in the general elections held in November 2022, the Maoist Centre has got an opportunity to lead the government at the centre after having forged an alliance with the Nepali Congress, Janata Samajbadi Party, CPN-Unified Socialist and other fringe parties. The party that had waged the decade-long armed insurgency had a major role in the drafting and promulgation of the inclusive federal constitution. Its role was also vital for abolishing the 240-year-old monarchy from the country. However, the party’s representation in the provincial assemblies and local governments still remains less than satisfactory. As a political force with commitment to bringing about perceptible socio-economic transformations in the country, the party has an important responsibility to work for implementing the hard-won constitution.

The Maoist Centre-led government has also intensified its probe into another Lalita Niwas land grab scam while the Department of Revenue Investigation has handed over the responsibility of investigating the 100-kg gold smuggling into the country to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CIB) under the Nepal Police. Significantly, the government seems to be serious in dealing with the cases of corruption. Prime Minister Prachanda and Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha have reiterated their pledges to give continuity to the ongoing probe, prosecution and action against corruption. The party has been under pressure to crack down on corruption as this evil practice has badly affected the development and good governance. In the CC meeting, Prachanda called on the party leaders to extend their support to the government’s anti-corruption drive. He restated that anyone found guilty of corruption will not be spared.
