Access To Treatment

blog

Access to quality medical treatment is a fundamental right that every citizen should obtain. However, in the context of Nepal's healthcare system, this right is far from being a reality for many. The disparities in healthcare access due to the lack of funds for treatment raise serious concerns about social justice and the well-being of citizens. The situation where people are resorting to suicide due to a lack of funds for access to medical treatment is distressing and demands urgent attention. Every life lost is a tragedy, and it reflects the dire need to address the healthcare disparities and financial barriers that hinder equitable access to medical treatment. It is heartening to hear Minister for Health and Population Mohan Bahadur Basnet’s commitment to ensuring that no citizen should die due to a lack of funds for medical treatment.

However, while the government's intention to provide essential medical services to all citizens is commendable, the challenges in Nepal's healthcare system require a deeper and more comprehensive approach. Minister Basnet rightly pointed out the disparities in healthcare access that still exist in the country. The urban-rural divide and the lack of adequate healthcare infrastructure in remote areas continue to hinder equal access to medical treatment. The government's decision to extend free healthcare services to the poor and needy is a positive step, but it needs to take proactive measures to strengthen healthcare facilities in rural areas. Moreover, the increasing risk of diseases like dengue highlights the importance of adapting to changing weather patterns and reinforcing public health preparedness.

The government needs to invest in disease prevention measures, such as educating the public about disease transmission and providing the necessary resources to tackle outbreaks effectively. The provision of special medical services and beds for high-ranking personalities, although necessary for emergencies, should not overshadow the larger goal of providing quality healthcare to the general public. A more sustainable approach would be to invest in the training and capacity-building of local doctors and medical professionals. This will help build trust in the expertise of local healthcare providers and reduce the dependency on seeking treatment abroad. Monitoring and regulating pharmacies are crucial to ensuring the safe and effective distribution of medications.

The government should also focus on ensuring the availability and affordability of essential drugs across the country. A comprehensive approach to pharmaceutical management will enhance healthcare access and quality. The founding of Dhulikhel Hospital as an exemplary institution is an inspiring story of providing quality healthcare at an affordable price. It serves as a model for other healthcare facilities in the country. The government should work towards replicating this success by supporting and strengthening public hospitals and encouraging private institutions to prioritise affordable healthcare services. The state must provide emergency financial assistance through public funds, grants, or insurance schemes designed to support those unable to afford medical expenses. Expanding health insurance coverage and making it more affordable for vulnerable populations can significantly alleviate the financial burden associated with medical treatment.

Equally important is the need for bridging the healthcare divide between urban and rural areas, enhancing public health preparedness, and investing in local healthcare expertise at the core of the government's strategy. The government should work towards a society where no one is compelled to use extreme measures owing to hefty medical expenses by prioritising equal access to healthcare, bolstering healthcare infrastructure, expanding the health insurance programme, and putting in place targeted financial assistance schemes to the needy.
