By Our Correspondent,Rukum West, July 21: Chaurjahari Municipality of Rukum West district has started issuing work permit for foreign employment.

Chaurjahari started issuing work permits and re-work permits on Wednesday, becoming the first municipality in the district to do so.

Krishna Sharma, employment coordinator of the municipality, informed that Dharma Rana of Chaurjahari Municipality-10 received a work permit on the day one.

Sharma said that Rana was welcomed to the office and given the work approval.

He said that citizens who want to go for overseas employment can get a work permit from the employment service centre.

“For that, service seekers have to apply at the employment service centre for a work permit for foreign employment,” he said.

Deputy-Mayor of Chaurjahari Municipality, Ishwari Sharma B.M, said that the service providing work permits for foreign employment from the local level has to made foreign employment more orderly, safe, reliable and easy according to the government regulations.

Stating that in the past service seekers had to go to Kathmandu to get a work permit, Sharma mentioned that the citizens of remote areas can now get this service near their own homes.

She said that even when one goes to Kathmandu, s/he faces many problems such as delay in work, exorbitant costs. “But to the relief of all concerned, now the service is available in one’s own municipality, and that’s a big thing.”

“This is a significant achievement for those who want to go abroad for employment. Earlier, people had to go to Kathmandu to get this work permit. There were a lot of expenses, including staying in a hotel, travel expenses. Now, the compulsion for migrant workers to go to Kathmandu for work permits has ended,” he said.

The ministerial decision of the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security on March 30, 2023 decided that citizens who want to go for foreign employment from mid-April must obtain work approval and re-work approval from the relevant local level.

According to the provisions of the Foreign Employment Act and the Foreign Employment Regulations, every citizen going abroad for foreign employment must first obtain a work permit.

Accordingly, the government has made arrangements to connect the employment service centres at the local level to the foreign employment information management system so that they can apply online for the work permit.
