Nepal establishes diplomatic relations with the Marshall Islands

By A Staff Reporter,Kathmandu, June 25: Nepal and the Marshall Islands have established diplomatic relations. 

The relationship was formalised by the signing of a joint communiqué at a ceremony held at the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations on Friday. 

Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations Amrit Bahadur Rai and his counterpart from the Marshall Islands Amatlain Elizabeth Kabua signed the agreement on behalf of their countries.

With this, the number of countries having diplomatic relations with Nepal has reached 181. For context, the United Nations (UN) currently has 193 member nations.

As per a press statement released by Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday, the two representatives also exchanged views about strengthening the bond between the two countries in bilateral and multilateral settings, including the UN.

The Marshall Islands is a nation of about 60,000 people with an area of 181.3 square kilometres. It is located mid-way between Australia and the American state of Hawaii in the central Pacific region. 

It was a trusteeship administered by the United States of America until October 21, 1986 when it gain independence. It became a UN member in 1991.

A day earlier, on Thursday, Nepal established diplomatic relations with Cameroon. 

The permanent representatives of the two countries to the UN signed a joint letter informing UN Secretary-General António Guterres about the establishment.
