Landslides hit Okhaldhunga

By Our Correspondent,Okhaldhunga, June 17: With the onset of the monsoon, risk of landslides has increased in various locations throughout the district of Okhaldhunga. On Wednesday evening, the day when the monsoon entered Nepal, landslides hit two areas in the district.

The ward office building of Molung Rural Municipality-3 has been hit by a landslide. A local resident, Dipa Phuyal, reported that a mound fell from above, burying a portion of the ward office after the rain. 

A masonry wall was constructed as part of the Prime Minister's Self-Employment Programme in the current fiscal year to protect the ward office but the wall itself collapsed when it was hit by the landslide. 

In another incident, a landslide demolished a house in Rambazaar of Siddicharan Municipality-11 in the district. 

Debendra Das, Police Inspector of the District Police Office, confirmed that a two-storey house belonging to Sanuram Shrestha was destroyed. The house was constructed using wood and zinc.

Police Inspector Das estimated the damages at Rs. 500,000. Additionally, a shop operated by Lakshmi Tamang, in the same house was also damaged.  The police stated that Shrestha's house collapsed as a result of continuous rainfall. 

Meanwhile, the District Disaster Management Committee has urged residents to take precautions to minimise damages from floods and landslides.
