the warm breeze starts blowing, and the sun shines brighter, people in Kathmandu prepare to embrace the summer season. With a change in weather comes the need for a shift in our wardrobe and diet choices. Choosing the right kind of clothing and food is not only important to stay comfortable but also to maintain good health.

According to experts, the key to staying cool and comfortable during the summer season is wearing loose-fitting, light-coloured clothes made of breathable fabrics like cotton. For women, cotton dresses, skirts, shorts, and tops are popular choices because they allow the skin to breathe and keep the body cool. Men often wear cotton or linen shirts, T-shirts, and shorts or lightweight pants. It's also important to wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect the face and eyes from the sun's harmful rays.

A sunscreen with a high SPF is also recommended to protect exposed skin. People must drink plenty of water, which can help prevent dehydration and heat exhaustion. The vibrant market in Kathmandu reflects popular choices of clothing during summer. Shopkeepers recommend lightweight and breathable clothes in bright colours and pastel shades, comfortable and stylish sandals, sunglasses, and hats are also in high demand as accessories to complete the perfect summer look.

It is best to avoid wearing heavy and dark-coloured clothes during the summer season in Nepal, as they tend to absorb heat and make wearers feel hot and uncomfortable. Clothes made of synthetic fabrics should also be avoided, as they don't allow the skin to breathe and can cause excessive sweating. Tight-fitting clothes like leggings, bodycon dresses should be evaded because they can trap heat and cause skin irritation.

Besides clothing, during summers, the problems we may deal with are associated with insect bites, skin rashes, and sunburn with cracking of the skin. Summer foods must have high moisture content and be naturally cooling. The ideal diet consists of cucumbers, juicy fruits, tofu, yoghurt, and other milk products. These ingredients are rich in water and essential nutrients, making them perfect for combating dehydration and providing your body with the necessary vitamins and minerals.

It is also essential to avoid heavy and greasy foods as they can make us feel uncomfortable due to excessive sweating. Foods that are high in fat, sugar, and salt should also be limited in view of their role in causing dehydration and increasing the risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Some options include salads made with fresh fruits and vegetables, such as cucumber, watermelon, and mint.

These ingredients are rich in water and essential nutrients, making them perfect for combating dehydration and providing your body with the necessary vitamins and minerals. Foods like deep-fried snacks, spicy and oily curries, fatty meats, heavy desserts including street food should be consumed in moderation as they can cause indigestion.

The right kind of food and clothing during the summer season is crucial to maintain good health and comfort. By opting for loose-fitting, breathable clothes, and consuming naturally cooling foods, we can enjoy the season without compromising our well-being.
