May 11: Farmers in the Tanahun district are worried because they have not found a market
for their ginger.
Farmers say that the main market
for their product is India, but they have faced problems as the Indian merchants
are not coming here to purchase ginger.
The harvested ginger
is stored in the godown as it remained unsold.
Chairman of Sana
Krishi Sahakari Sanstha of Bhimad Municipality, Narayan Khanal, said that ginger
that is not sold has started to sprout.
Bhimad and
Shuklgandaki Municipality, Rishing Municipality, Devghat, and Bandipur Rural
Municipalities are known for the ginger pocket area. Relying solely on the
Indian market has created problems for farmers to find their market.
Cooperative has
purchased 26 thousand KG gingers from farmers however it remained unsold.
Khanal said that supply stoppage to the Indian market and lack of demand in the local market has troubled the farmers.
Cooperative purchased ginger
for Rs. 40 per kg from farmers.
However, rent is being
continuously paid for the store in the godown.
It is the main cash crop
for the farmers of hilly areas. February and March districts are the main planting seasons of ginger. Its harvesting season falls in December and January.
Krisi Gyan Kendra
(Agriculture Knowledge Center) has projected that the ginger has been planted
in 600 hectares of Tanahun and is expected to produce over 600 metric tons.
