Amid lofty vision and assurances of development, the rural communities in Nepal continue to endure the risk of outdated infrastructure. One striking example is the ongoing reliance on ‘tuins'— makeshift cable contraptions — used to cross rivers in remote areas. This issue, long highlighted as a priority by successive governments, still remains unaddressed, leaving communities like those in Kharpunath Rural Municipality of Humla District vulnerable and frustrated. In 2019, the then-government had promised to get rid of tuins by January 2021. But now that promise sounds unfulfilled and meaningless. The intention was to replace dangerous cable crossing

India recently held its general elections which took place from 19th April to 1st June, 2024. 543 members of the Lok Sabha were elected in seven phases of election. And the results were shocking. While Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) earned the highest number of seats (240), it still fell short of a majority in the Lok Sabha. It came as a shock as BJP was expected to win a landslide victory. In coalition with National Democratic Alliance (NDA), BJP leader Narendra Modi has been elected the Prime Minister for a third consecutive time (a feat only Jawaharlal Nehru had held). But Modi is unlikely to have an iron clad role in the governance like he did the previous times. People in India had it in their hands to voice their opinions through their choice of political representatives. As such, citizens of the world’s largest democracy have spoken and they seem to want a change from the government policies. It shows that despite Modi’s widesprea

:The Chinese government is taking aim at European farmers instead of German automakers by launching an investigation into European Union pork imports, just days after the EU said it plans to impose provisional tariffs on China-made electric vehicles. The Commerce Ministry didn't mention the EV tariffs when it announced Monday that it is opening an anti-dumping investigation into pork from Europe, but the move is widely seen as a response to the EU move on electric cars. It also gives China a bargaining chip in any trade negotiations. China could have slapped a 25% duty on imports of gasoline-powered vehic
Senior citizens have faced huge challenges in obtaining national identity cards during the intense heat of summer. The temperature of Bhairahawa has been above 42 degrees Celsius for the past few days, and senior citizens have been standing in serpentine queues at the District Administration Office to apply for national identity cards. Following the government’s mandate to require national identity cards for social security allowances, the district administration office has been overwhelmed with elderly individuals applying for national identity cards. Chumkala Basyal, who came from Devdaha to make her 90-year-old father’s national identity card, said that senior citizens face a lot of difficulties while standing in line for hours braving the scorching heat. She suggested that starting the process of issuing identity cards from the ward office or distributing security allowances through citizenship documents would have been more effective. The number of service seekers has increased at the District Administration Office for the past few weeks.
