Fake anti-corruption activists arrested

Kathmandu, June 19: Four individuals who claimed to be anti-corruption activists have been arrested on charges of fraud.

According to the Kathmandu District Police Office, within the Gokarneshwar Municipality area, they had illegally established an organisation named Campaign Against Irregularities and Corruption-2080 and expanded its branches in various wards.

The police said that the individuals visited various government offices, local bodies, schools, organisations, companies, factories, community improvement committees and consumer committees, claiming to be anti-corruption activists. They demanded unnecessary information and threatened the officials.

"We have received complaints against you for corruption, tax evasion, and financial irregularities. We have come to investigate these matters. Show us all the accounts," they demanded, asking for unrelated information, threatening officials and employees, creating terror by claiming to file lawsuits, making videos, and illegally collecting money. They also posted unverified allegations on social media to assassinate characters, according to the police complaint.

Following a complaint at the Bouddha Police Circle, four individuals were arrested on June 17.

The arrested individuals were identified as 31-year-old Raju Sunar from Gokarneshwar Municipality-6, 26-year-old Adarsha Kshetri from the same municipality-8, 20-year-old Asmita Khatri of ward number 1, and 45-year-old Prem Prasad Shrestha from ward number 2.

Police are conducting further investigations into their activities.
