Taplejung, June 19: A historical Limbu Cultural Museum in Mamangkhel of Sirijangha Rural Municipality-6 in Taplejung district has been damaged by a landslide that descended from above due to continuous rainfall.

The museum in Mamangkhel is considered the first museum of its kind.

Kailash Mabo, a local, informed that the landslide, which started with the constant rainfall since Wednesday last week, damaged the museum's external structure.

According to Mabo, the landslide has caused damage to

the ancient-style museum building. He said, “The landslide has put the museum building at risk, and its debris has accumulated

on the museum premises.” He said bigger landslides could occur if the rain continued, resulting

in complete damage to the museum.

The Limbu Cultural Museum was established in 2006 to

preserve and promote Limbu

culture. The museum houses weapons, hunting tools and materials required for the birth and death rituals of the Limbu community.

Additionally, documents of treaties made by King

Prithvi Narayan Shah with

the Limbu in 1757 and 1774, shields, swords, arrows and spears used in wars are also preserved in the museum, informed the museum management committee.

The management committee has expressed concern over the damage caused to the historic Limbu Cultural Museum by the landslide.
