May 1 is an important occasion for working class people worldwide. This day is celebrated as International Workers’ Day. In the late 1800s, a huge labour movement had been launched in different parts of the world, including the United States, to protect the rights of the workers. Many American employees and workers had voiced against the harsh labour laws and violation of their rights, adverse working conditions and long working hours. A lot of workers had also sacrificed their lives. Promoted by the international labour movement, the day is also known as Labour Day or May Day. The date was selected in 1889 by the Marxist International Socialist Congress for political reasons. The organisation that met in Paris founded the Second International as a successor to the previous International Workingmen's Association. The gathering adopted a historic resolution for a gigantic international demonstration in support of demands raised by the working class for reducing the 16-hour workday to eight hours. This working hour has been accepted universally since then.
With five-party coalition partners firmly in power, alliance politics in the nation appears to stay for years to come. After remaining at the helm for almost a year, the five-party ruling coalition has sensed better times ahead should they preserve their company unbroken. Devising an electoral alliance to contest local elections could push up their chances in provincial and federal parliamentary polls due in six to seven months. While the ruling dispensation has tied a firm bond, the main opposition, the UML, has also allied with some political parties to achieve sound results when the nation goes to the local poll on May 13.
Nepal is a multi-ethnic country with 125 ethnic groups. The caste system, which has persisted for centuries, is still prevalent in the country. The caste system is not bad per se but indulging in caste-based discrimination certainly is. Dalits are considered a lower caste. Over 20 Dalit castes exist in the country. They are discriminated against by higher-caste people on the basis of their very caste. They are not only humiliated at the hands of higher-caste people but also physically assaulted. They are subjected to assault and battery, physical and mental torture, rape, break-up of inter-caste marriages, false allegations, beatings in public places, etc.
It is a fact that doctors’ handwriting can only be read by an experienced pharmacist who can know what medicine the physician wanted to prescribe based on the diagnosis and the symptoms. There are plenty of jokes on a doctor's handwriting but how is it that every doctor's handwriting is equally bad? Every year the poor handwriting of doctors is responsible for the deaths of more than 5,000 people. From the patients’ perspective, illegible handwriting can delay treatment and lead to unnecessary tests and inappropriate doses of medicines, which, in turn, can result in discomfort and death. It's a serious problem - as the patient may get sicker or die after being given the wrong drug - but is vastly underreported in India. Not everyone can figure out a doctor's prescription.
At a time when the service seekers of government hospitals are worried about two-day holiday, the Nepal Medical Association (NMA) has welcomed the government’s decision. Issuing a press statement, NMA has said that two-day holiday was a right decision as health workers were reeling under mental and physical pressure due to excessive work load. But as a service seeker, many patients are compelled to wait for months or years for a surgery at government hospitals. If the hospitals adopt two-day holiday rule, many patients whose condition is serious or who need emergency treatment would suffer.

Landless squatters living in unorganised settlements in Jhapa are not happy with the political parties as the latter did little to solve their problems which they raised in successive election in the past.
