Tourism Reviving

blog

Dixya Poudel

Tourism is a global industry that is worth trillions of dollars. And it spawns numerous socio-economic incentives. Foreign revenues increase and nations get exposure to the world while being highlighted in the global map. For all these reasons and more, Nepal could really benefit from boosting tourism industry which has been its prominent source of income for decades. It is already known for its stellar natural vistas whether it is in the Himalayan range, a boat ride in its numerous sprawling lakes or the wildlife reserves.

Talking of the mountain ranges, Nepal boasts of Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world. Thus, mountaineering is an indelible part of the nation’s tourism. From hotel and restaurant owners to handicraft sellers, tourism industry boosts the economy of many in Nepal. If you were to linger in the vicinity of the major tourists’ attractions in the nation, you would find small shop owners ranging from arts and crafts to religious and cultural souvenirs.

Then there are tourist guides who work tirelessly to accommodate tourists and earn a livelihood. However, this industry is heavily dependent on the flow of tourists. Especially the two years of the pandemic led to a dwindling tourism not just in Nepal but worldwide. During the pre-pandemic era, the nation’s economy largely relied on the foreign revenue flowing through the tourism industry. It is important that the industry meets the statistics of the pre-pandemic era. It would be even better if it could exceed the numbers in terms of tourists visiting.

Thus, the upcoming days are vital for Nepal in the tourism sector. Thankfully, the government has wasted no time in rejuvenating this industry as it has unveiled “Nepal tourism decade (2023-2032) strategic action plan’. It aims to increase the tourists visiting the nation to 3.5 million by 2032 which is quite ambitious. In addition, it hopes to lift the tourist spending from the current US$ 48 to $ 125. Sure enough, it will create jobs for millions of Nepalis.

Visitors who have been to Nepal praise it for its natural beauty paired by equally hospitable, friendly and welcoming citizens. And in a way, the hospitality sector of Nepal has always put tourists first. While decades ago, it was foreigners who sustained the industry, now both the international and national tourists help boost the hospitality industry. More and more Nepali youth who have had an international experience are interested in tourism activities such as hiking, trekking and mountain biking. They often take to the hills and mountainous regions to escape the hustle and bustle of the city life.

And urban life can take a toll on a person with the air pollution, the congested traffic and a dearth of the greenery. Being in nature is quite soothing to the soul. It fortifies a person. Therefore, as the youth increasingly take part in the national tourism, it has become important to accommodate and entertain them through novel ways. One thinks of holiday discounts and special offers when it comes to tourism deals. Thus, as Nepal sees a surge in tourists, it will be advantageous to boost its tourism industry through alluring travel incentives and shrewd marketing strategies.
