By A Staff Reporter, Kathmandu, May 31: Prime Minister Balendra Shah has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ending all forms of violence, exploitation and discrimination against women, while stressing the need for stronger implementation of women’s rights gender equality and empowerment.
In a message issued on the occasion of the 8th National Women’s Rights Day, he said that the Constitution of Nepal guarantees women’s rights as fundamental rights and ensures proportional and inclusive representation, as well as meaningful participation, in all state bodies.
Alongside legal provisions, greater social awareness is essential to eliminate harmful practices such as child marriage, witchcraft accusations, chhaupadi, dowry and tilak customs, as well as gender-based, domestic and digital violence, the Prime Minister said.
The Prime Minister further emphasised the need to build a self-reliant and prosperous society through the empowerment of women who are economically, socially and educationally disadvantaged.
He further reassured that the government remains committed to ending all forms of violence, exploitation and discrimination against women.
The active collaboration among the state, communities and all stakeholders is necessary for the protection and promotion of women’s rights, he added.
Minister for Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities, and Social Security Sita Badi also issued a message on the occasion.
In her message, Minister Badi said that the cooperation among the state, communities and civil society is essential for the protection of women’s rights, gender equality and social transformation.
She stated that women’s rights are not confined solely to legal provisions or policy declarations, but are also closely linked to social behaviour, equal access to opportunities and dignified participation.
She noted that the full implementation in practice of the women’s rights guaranteed by the constitution requires commitment and active participation from all sectors.
This year, National Women’s Rights Day is being observed under the slogan: “Respect for Women’s Rights: A Campaign for Self-Reliance and Prosperity.”
