By Jyoti Panti,Babai (Bardiya), Apr. 4: Bardiya National Park (BNP), a main tourist destination in western Nepal, has begun preparations to celebrate its golden jubilee on April 10.
The park is planning a series of special events to mark 50 years since its establishment. Spanning 968 square kilometres, the park was originally established in 1976 as the Karnali Wildlife Reserve before being upgraded to a national park.
Known as the largest national park in the Tarai region, Bardiya was initially famous for its population of one-horned rhinoceros. In recent years, however, it has gained further recognition for its success in conserving the Bengal tiger.
To make the golden jubilee celebrations grand, the park administration has already begun consultations with various stakeholders. The programme will honour individuals and organisations that have contributed to conservation efforts. There are also plans to establish a human-wildlife coexistence fund.
According to Conservation Officer and Information Officer Saroj Mani Paudel, preparations for the April 10 celebrations are in their final stages.
Similarly, Chief Conservation Officer Ashok Ram expressed confidence that the jubilee will highlight conservation achievements and promote tourism in the area.
Located along the East-West Highway, the park offers a range of attractions including jungle safaris, elephant stables, a crocodile breeding centre, and a centre for managing conflict-prone tigers.
With preparations underway, conservationists have expressed growing enthusiasm. Individuals who have long been involved in conservation efforts are actively working to ensure the success of the celebrations.
Chairperson of the Bardiya Buffer Zone Management Committee, Hemant Acharya, said the golden jubilee programme would inspire those working in conservation to continue their efforts.
