By Our Correspondent,Nepalgunj, Mar. 21: Duduwa Rural Municipality in Banke has declared a public holiday for all schools on Friday in anticipation of strong winds and storms.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) issued a warning forecasting heavy winds accompanied by thunder, lightning, and rainfall from Friday through Saturday morning. Prioritising the safety of children, the municipality decided to close all schools for the day.
Narendra Chaudhary, Chief of the Rural Municipality, warned of potential risks including falling trees, damage to weak structures and rooftops, and disruptions to electricity and communications. He urged everyone to remain cautious.
According to the weather Department, strong winds are expected across districts in Lumbini and Koshi Provinces, with gusts reaching up to 119 km/h in the Tarai regions around Nepalgunj and Dang. The municipality has also issued a public notice advising residents to stay alert in view of the likely severe weather.
Similarly, Kohalpur Municipality has urged residents to take precautions. During the storm, the public is advised to avoid weak structures, tall trees, telephone and electricity poles, and wires, to refrain from touching downed power lines, to switch off electrical equipment, and to avoid high-risk areas, said Kohalpur Chief of Municipal Police, Bir Bahadur Thapa.
Banke Disaster Management has also urged vigilance, stating that all preparations have been completed and authorities remain on high alert to protect residents from potential hazards.
