EC distributes PR seats to six political parties

Kathmandu, March 12: The Election Commission (EC) has determined House of Representatives (HoR) seats for political parties under the proportional representation (PR) system.

The results and HoR seat allocation under the PR seats were made public this evening.     

Issuing a press release today, the EC shared that seats were allocated for six political parties that crossed the thresholds determined in accordance with the existing law based on the total number of valid votes obtained by the parties as per clause 60 (2) of the House of Representatives Election Act, 2074 BS.     

The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has received 57 seats under the PR election system followed by the Nepali Congress with 20 seats.     

Similarly, the CPN (UML) received 16 seats, the Nepali Communist Party secured nine seats and Shram Sanskriti Party and Rastriya Prajatantra Party got four seats each.     

In the HoR elections 2082, out of 18 million 903 thousand and 689 voters, 11 million 168 thousand and 32 voters had cast votes under the first-past-the-post election system. Of the votes, 10 million 559 thousand and 17 votes (94.55 per cent) were valid.     

Similarly, in the PR election system, 11 million 280 thousand and 617 votes were cast. Of them, 10 million 835 thousand and 25 (96.05) votes were valid.     

The EC has also sent a circular to the concerned political parties to select the name of candidates and submit at the SC within three days following the seats determined by the EC as per the clause 60 (4) of the House of Representatives Election Act, 2074 BS, Rule 41 of HoR Member Election Regulation, 2074 BS and Clause 35 of the HoR Member Proportional Election Guideline, 2082.
