By TRN Online, Kathmandu, March 11: Election deposits of a large number of participants in the First-past-the-post (FPTP) system during the House of Representatives (HoR) election on March 5 have been forfeited.
According to the Election Commission, 2, 890 candidates have been unable to save their security deposit for contesting in the election.
There is an arrangement for securing a certain election deposit as per the law for those who want to contest in the election, according to the Information Officer of the EC, Suman Ghimire.
He said that there is a legal provision of having the deposit forfeited if a candidate is unable to secure votes of less than 10 per cent.
Information officer Ghimire said, "Deposits have been forfeited for 2,890 candidates who participated in the FPTP. Of them, 350 candidates were not able to secure even a single vote; that is, their vote count is at nil."
Of the candidates, 516 have been able to save the election deposit.
The commission said that candidates who have secured the security deposit must apply for the refund of the deposit within 90 days of the final election results being announced.
