Manang, Feb 28: A modern climate measurement center has been established at Prakash Jyoti Secondary School in Thonche, Nason Rural Municipality-5, Manang.

This center has been established at a cost of Rs. 400,000 under joint collaboration between Tribhuvan University Kirtipur, Kathmandu and the University of Lausanne, Switzerland. The center has equipments to measure air temperature, relative humidity, rain gauge, wind speed and direction.

According to the school Principal Padmaraj Panthi, the center will collect and analyze weather-related data at the regional level and will help facilitate teaching and learning as well.

The data collected from the center is expected to make a significant contribution to long-term climate trend studies, strengthening weather forecasts, analyzing the impact of climate change, and assessing the risk of natural disasters such as floods, landslides and droughts.

The center will provide practical learning opportunities to local students, who will be able to directly study weather measurement processes, data recording, and analysis methods. This is expected to increase students' interest in scientific research, said Nason-5 Ward Chair Thuten Lama. Timely scientific data will also help in disaster preparedness and risk reduction strategies.(RSS)
