Kathmandu, Jan. 23: The Nepali Congress has called a meeting of its Central Working Committee for Friday, at 1:00 pm at the party’s central office, Sanepa, Lalitpur. Central Working Committee office bearers, members and provincial presidents have been requested to attend.

The meeting was announced by party secretary Prakash Sharma following the resignation of Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel. He stepped down after a new Central Working Committee, formed through a special general convention, came into effect.

A new working committee under the leadership of party president Gagan Thapa was constituted on January 14. The committee is scheduled to arrive at the party’s central office in Sanepa on Friday to formally assume office and hold its first central committee meeting.

Secretary Prakash Sharma issued the official notice convening the Central Working Committee meeting. Previously, even after the new leadership had been selected at the special general convention, Chief Secretary Paudel and outgoing acting president Purna Bahadur Khadka had continued to issue notices on the party’s letterhead.

Meanwhile, senior Nepali Congress leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has said he has taken a middle-path to prevent the party from splitting. Speaking at an interaction programme with party leaders and cadres in Morang Constituency No. 6, Sundarharaincha, on Thursday, Koirala said he chose a calm and restrained path to safeguard party unity.

He stated that the party is now moving forward towards the House of Representatives elections, which he said would provide a clear solution for the country. Explaining his decision not to participate in the special general convention, Koirala said that his presence there could have led to a split in the party.

Calling the special general convention an internal party process, Koirala said that differences arising from it should now be put to rest. “Today, Dr. Dila Sangraula and I are on the same side, walking together in the electoral race. The issue of the convention is over,” he said.

Koirala also reflected on his time as a Member of Parliament, saying he had focused on policy-making aimed at improving people’s lives and had consistently spoken out against corruption and in favour of good governance, both inside and outside Parliament.
