Kathmandu, Dec 20: Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal today inspected the Central Prison located in Bidur, Nuwakot.
During the inspection, he stated that necessary arrangements would be made to soon operate the vacant block as a juvenile rehabilitation centre.
On the occasion, Minister Aryal instructed the prison administration to ensure that every activity within the prison is conducted in a manner respectful of human rights and within the bounds of the law, taking due consideration of the inmates' human rights, the Home Minister's press coordinator Purushottam Khatri said.
He was concerned about the prisoners' daily meals, accommodation and other services and facilities, and drew the attention of the prison administration to improve any shortcomings.
The relatives of the prisoners had drawn attention to the poor road infrastructure leading to the prison. In response, Minister Aryal has expressed a commitment to facilitate the rapid improvement of the road infrastructure, his secretariat stated.
The Government of Nepal, in its cabinet meeting held on December 18, approved the operation of an empty block in the Central Prison to accommodate juvenile offenders over the age of 18 who are currently in various juvenile correction centres across the country and still have remaining sentences.
It is stated that a maximum of 500 juvenile offenders can be accommodated in the said block.
Currently, there are eight correctional facilities across the country. Of these, four are managed and operated by the non-governmental organisation named UCEF Nepal.(RSS)
