Kathmandu, Dec 15: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagadish Kharel emphasized the need to make postal service of the country more modern, commercial and competitive.
The Minister, also spokesperson of the government, said so while monitoring the General Post Office at Dillibazar, Kathmandu today.
Minister Kharel urged the concerned authorities for modernization of the postal services by taking into account the changing context of the country.
Furthermore, he highlighted the need to effectively implement action plan for all the postal offices across the country for them to generate income and thereby contribute to the State and the public.
He insisted, "We should make the postal service more commercial and competitive. The Postal Office should be able to generate income."
During the inspection, Minister Kharel instructed the relevant authorities to accelerate the implementation of the 'Smart Post Office' framework.
The Framework seeks to modernize postal service by integrating information technology and expand services and improve efficiency.
Similarly, Radhika Aryal, Secretary at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology shared that the Ministry was making efforts for policy and structural reforms for the 'Smart Post Office' concept.
She further revealed that the proposal seeking approval for the criteria for the 'Smart Post Office' has already been presented.
The Secretary expressed her confidence that the proposal will be approved and it will be brought into effect very soon.
Aryal, who was accompanying Minister Kharel during the inspection, divulged that necessary budget has been allocated in the ongoing fiscal year 2025/26 to transform at least 50 postal offices into a smart post office. (RSS)
