Nepali youth receives 'Bright Spark Award' from Adelaide University

Kathmandu, Dec 11: The Adelaide University of Australia has presented 'Bright Spark Award' to a Nepali student for developing a communication tool to assist in the mining industry works with the use of Artificial Intelligence. 

Shyam Sundar Shrestha, 22, of Kathmandu, a Bachelor level student, was rewarded with the prestigious award amidst a special programme hosted on the occasion of its Silver Jubilee. 

The University has clarified that the award was conferred on Nepali student Shrestha and his team with high recognition for developing an AI Module for mining industry. 

The tool they innovated can be used to have conversation between the workers of JDA tunnel (mine area) and AI agent through Walkie Talkie. 

According to the University, the technology can promptly provide technical data, safety protocol and other vital information to the workers without new infrastructural need. 

On the occasion of the final pitch (award selection competition) amidst the special presence of 300 prestigious industrialists and entrepreneurs, Shrestha presented the technical demo of the technology by wearing mining safety gear. 

After being honoured with the award acknowledging his special role in innovation, Shrestha told RSS that coming to Australia, studying hard, and being able to amplify the honour and reputation of Nepal and Nepali people had been a pride moment for him. 

It was noted that the university has been rewarding young students engaged in inventions with the idea of making creative work related to innovation and entrepreneurship, including startups, simple and accessible. 

It is said that this type of programme, which started in 2001, has helped launch more than 1,100 startups. (RSS)
