Legal debate within NC on special general convention

blog

Kathmandu, Nov 10: The anti-establishment side of the Nepali Congress (NC) has started legal consultation about special general convention, as two opinions have emerged within the party whether to go for regular or special general convention.

At a programme titled 'Legal consultation related to special general convention' held at Ananda Events in Bhimsengola today, NC leaders, advocates and legal experts put their opinion about the legitimacy of special general convention, political necessity, and internal democratic process of the party.

NC leader Devraj Chalise said the central committee should understand the essence of the signatures collected for the special convention. "The party should be governed as per its statute. This is what the essence of internal democracy".

Former President of Nepal Democratic Lawyers Association Upendra Keshari Neupane commented that NC now is oriented towards the anti-democratic political line while underlining the need of bringing back the party to its ideological clarity.

Likewise, senior advocate Radheshyam Adhiakri said there is a clear provision in the NC statute that the special general convention can be summoned when 40 percent plus general convention members demand this with their signatures.

He stressed the need to explore political outlet to the issue besides legal ones.

Former Chairperson of Nepal Bar Association Prem Bahadur Khadka said the special general convention should be held before the upcoming general convention.

He claimed that the coalition with the Maoists was detrimental to the Nepali Congress in the long run which has now increased discontent within the party.

Present on the occasion were NC central members, general convention members, province and district presidents.  (RSS)
