Kathmandu, Oct 4: Children as Zone of Peace (CZOP)-National Campaign has urged political parties to prioritize issues concerning children in their election manifestos for the House of Representatives (HoR) elections scheduled for March 5, 2026.

In a press statement issued today, CZOP Chair Tilottam Paudel called on all concerned to refrain from using children in election campaigns and other political activities.

It has also urged the Election Commission not to set up voting centers in schools and to include these provisions in the election code of conduct.

Citing that Nepal is a state party to the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989), the CZOP reminded political parties of the fundamental rights of children guaranteed by the Constitution. It referred to the constitutional provision stating that “No child shall be subjected to recruitment or use in the army, police, or armed groups; neglected or used immorally; or abused physically, mentally, or sexually; or exploited in any manner, including in the name of religious or cultural practices.”

The statement further noted that the Act Relating to Children, 2075 BS (2018) prohibits the use of children for political purposes, directly or indirectly. It called for the protection of children’s rights to healthcare, education, and safety, and urged authorities to ensure that children are not affected by school closures, strikes, rallies, or assemblies under any circumstances.

The CZOP also expressed concern over the non-appointment of a Minister for Women, Children, and Senior Citizens since the formation of the incumbent government on September 12. (RSS)
