Kathmandu, Oct.17: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has expressed grief over the death of Kanchha Sherpa, a member of the first successful expedition to climb Mount Everest.

Sherpa passed away on Thursday at the age of 92 at his residence in Kapan, Kathmandu.

Expressing heartfelt tributes to him and condolences to the bereaved family, Prime Minister Karki said that not only a direct witness to the historic climb, but also a living legacy has been lost.

Taking to the X, the PM said that for nearly seven and a half decades, he shared with later generations the experience of an event that was considered a special achievement of humanity at the time.

Similarly, in recent years, Sherpa has been concerned about the effects of climate change starting to be felt in the Himalayas.

PM Karki has mentioned that acting sensitively towards that would be a true tribute to him, and that is the responsibility of all of us now.

Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa reached the summit of Mount Everest in May, 1953. Sherpa was involved as a porter in that expedition team and he had reached above eight thousand metres.
