Kathmandu, Sept 5: Chairman of the CPN (Maoist Centre), Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' has said climate change is a severe challenge facing the country.
The unity among working people is the only measure to seek solution to this common challenge, he stressed.
In his address to an interaction the Forest, Environment and Climate Department of his party organized on 'environment, climate change and management' here Friday, Prachanda argued the impact of climate change is the result of unsuccessful model of capitalist development. "Entire humanity is exposed to existential crisis owing to climate change. If it is not tackled in a wise manner, the crises would worsen further," he reminded.
Also the former Prime Minister, Prachanda recollected Nepal government's presence in the international forums relating to climate change and the advocacy made for the climate justice. "We, as the representative of the poor country, have been raising this issue vibrantly in the international events," Dahal shared.
The rich and industrialized countries are behind the emission of carbon that is detrimental to environmental health of the planet and putting the poor countries at receiving end, he said, underscoring the need of giving continuity to the demand of compensation to Nepal whose emission is negligible.
Moreover, the Chairman said although the concept of community forest management was brought with good intention, it was later full of bad governance.
He praised a concept note the party department prepared on this pressing issue, which he believed, would contribute to national dialogues and help create international pressure.
The event was attended by department in-charge Shakti Bahadur Basnet, subject experts and other leaders.(RSS)
