Koshi Province doled out Rs 88.5 million for patients with chronic diseases last fiscal year

Jhapa, Aug 27: The Koshi Province government doled out Rs 88.5 million in economic assistance to patients suffering from chronic diseases during the last fiscal year (2081–82 BS). The support targeted individuals battling illnesses such as cancer, kidney failure, spinal injuries, head injuries, and sickle cell anaemia.

According to Dr Kenin Rai, Information Officer at the Province Government's Ministry of Health, a total of 1,715 patients received financial aid during the period. Based on the nature of their illnesses and their applications, patients were provided with assistance ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 100,000.

Specifically, Rs 50,000 was provided to 1,660 patients diagnosed with cancer, kidney-related issues, spinal injuries, and head injuries. Meanwhile, 55 patients who had undergone kidney transplants received Rs 100,000 each.

However, in the current fiscal year, the government has discontinued this budget allocation due to increased financial responsibilities. Instead, the Ministry has developed a new working procedure focused on providing health insurance for patients with chronic illnesses and renewing policies for those who are already insured.

Previously, kidney transplant patients were eligible for Rs 200,000 in assistance, while other chronic disease patients received Rs 100,000 each. Last year, the support amounts were halved due to budget constraints and rising demand. This economic assistance programme was first introduced in the fiscal year 2079–80 BS. (RSS)
