Home Minister Lekhak calls for ending drug abuse

Kathmandu, August 1: Minister for Home Affairs Ramesh Lekhak has underscored the urgency and effective actions to eliminate narcotic drugs from the country.     

Inspecting the office of the Narcotics Control Bureau of Nepal Police at Koteshwor in Kathmandu today, Minister Lekhak mentioned that production, storage and use of the narcotic drugs had emerged as a severe challenge lately.     

"The abuse of the narcotic drugs gives a rise to road accident, suicide and cyber crimes. We have launched a campaign against narcotic drugs for a year. The campaign is meaningful," the Minister said, calling for cooperation from one and all for the campaign.     

He called for collective efforts to combat abuse of narcotic drugs.     

"We have made notable progress in narcotic drug control over the last year compared to the previous years. We must move ahead to tackle this challenge more effectively in coming days. Despite the resource crunch, we would deliver a lot in this sector," the Minister assessed the impact of the campaign.     

Noting the growing threat of narcotic drugs, the Minister acknowledged that the issue had evolved into a serious national concern. He pledged to continue the campaign against the narcotic drug abuse.     

The Home Minister expressed serious concerns to the drug addition of youths, who he termed, was a force linked to the nation's future.     

"The mega campaign against drug abuse has brought about results. Only action to the drug abusers was not sufficient. Campaigns against drug abuse should be initiated and this was the responsibility of all citizens," he viewed.     

Likewise, Home Minister Lekhak vowed to develop the Bureau as a department in the Nepal Police and also pledged full support from the Home Ministry.     

On the occasion, Inspector General of Nepal Police Deepak Thapa appreciated the Home Minister's announcement to upgrade the Bureau into a department.(RSS)
