‘Finance key contributor to abuse against woman in country’

By Mahima Devkota, Kathmandu, July 2: Finance has been witnessed to be the biggest reason triggering abuse against woman in the country.

Addressing the ‘Interaction program on the programs and activities conducted by National Woman Commission organized here today, Psychosocial counsellor Tulasha Katuwal said that finance has been observed to be the biggest reason triggering abuse against woman violence in the country as per the cases witnessed by National Woman Commission on the fiscal year 2081/82.

According to her, among the cases of woman violence that was reported in the National Woman Commission , 151 has been termed as mental violence, 255 as financial violence, 215 as physical abuse, eight cases as sexual abuse.

Bagmati Province records highest cases of domestic violence

A total of 197 cases of woman violence has been reported in the National Woman Commission from Bagmati Province making it the top on the list, followed by Koshi Province standing at 32 reported cases, Madhes Province standing at 29 reported cases. In the similar manner, reported cases from Gandaki Province stands at 22, Lumbini Province stands at 16 cases, Sudur Paschim Province stands at nine cases and the least cases has been reported from Karnali Province, which stands at five.

Secretary of the National Woman Commission Rekha Kandel said that a total of 1,706 cases of woman violence has been reported in the fiscal year 2081/82 till the month of June, of which, 636 were referred and 1,070 was dealt by the woman commission.

She emphasized on the need to further expand the commission to all provinces and local levels so that it reaches on the grassroots level as well.

She said that finance and lack of manpower has limited their horizon.
