Democracy and the press complement each other: Foreign Minister Rana

blog

Kathmandu, June 13: Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba has said democracy and the press are complementary to each other and that the media should also be responsible for the personal freedoms of any individual.

Objecting to a news article in the Nagarik vernacular daily that reported a telephone conversation she had with Shobha Gyawali, the director of Nepal Republic Media, as a threat, she stated that she believes the media is inherently victim-friendly.

She stated that it is regrettable that some opinions expressed based on this are understood by the press as threatening language.

"I am surprised to see news published about me in the 'Nagarik Daily'. I have spoken with her (Gyawali) regarding the factually incorrect and misleading video that has come on social media with malicious intent to defame our family, and its judicial interpretation," she said.

Minister Dr Rana has also recalled that no one can forget the contribution of the Nepali Congress, which has fought the most for democracy, civil rights, and press freedom in Nepal. (RSS)
